GMAT (Graduation Management Aptitude Test)

The GMAT determines your aptitude for business management and is an eligibility test used by many business schools for your admission into their postgraduate business programs.

What is the GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admissions Test is a computer-based, and is unique for each student. The GMAT measures the Verbal, Mathematical and Analytical skills. Business schools use this standardised test to test a graduate’s potential for an MBA or other management-oriented business and even non-business programs. The GMAT is scored on a maximum of 800.

What does this test consist of?
The GMAT is made of two sections:
1) Analytical Writing Assessment
2) Quantitative and Verbal Sections

1) Analytical Writing Assessment
This consists of two 30-minute essays scored on a scale of 0-6:
a. Examine and Analyse an Argument
b. Consider and Analyse an Issue

Both essays are rated by two readers, where:
- The first reader is a computer program, an E-rater that analyses creative writing, structure, spelling and  syntax.
- The second reader is a human who looks at the overall substance of the essay
- The final score is an average of the marks given by both readers.

2) Quantitative and Verbal Section
These sections adapt themselves to the skill level of the test taker. This means that if the candidate is able to answer a question correctly, the next question would be of a slightly increased difficulty level. An incorrectly question prompts the next question of a slightly easier nature.

Herein:
The Quantitative Section consists of 37 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 75 minutes that tests the candidate’s data presentation and problem solving skills.
The Verbal Section consists of 41 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 75 minutes that tests the candidate’s reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, and grammar skills.

Are there any test aids?
Taking the GMAT requires simple computer skills. The test is designed such that a candidate undergoes a tutorial to understand how to use the different functions of the online test and to respond appropriately to each question.

How does one score in the GMAT?
The test carries a total score of 800 marks. A reputed business school will look for candidates with a score upwards of mid-600. No two questions carry the same marks and the number of marks that a question carries depends on its difficulty level. Also, a particular section (either Maths or English) can have a higher number of marks.

If I have appeared for the GMAT more than once, scores from which test will count? For how long are these scores valid?
Scores from the most recent GMAT exam count. These are valid for five years.

How much does it cost to take the GMAT? How do I register?
The charges are $250 payable to ETS-GMAT in US dollars.
You can register simply by making a call or by submitting your application at the nearest GMAT centre. If you are calling to register, do keep your Credit Card and Passport Number handy.

When can I take the GMAT? How soon can I see my GMAT results?
The GMAT is a test you can appear for the year round, but in the last three weeks of every calendar month.

You can see your results for the maths and verbal section as soon as you finish the exam. Official scores (with scores for AWA), however, take 21 days to reach you.

What is percentile?
Percentile is a measure of where you stand as compared to other candidates. If you have secured 85 percentile, it means you have scored above 85% of the students who have been taking the exam in the past five years. It also means that 15% of the remaining candidates are ahead of you, performance-wise.

How can I prepare better for the test?
While it may be that you are able to balance a low GMAT score with a high grade point average (GPA) or make up for it with an impressive interview or good business experience, it works in your own interest to prepare well ahead of the test and then consider improving your score with a re-exam.

Take advantage of the various GMAT practice tests and Test Pacers online to aim finishing your test in good time.
