Telephonic Interview
Telephonic interviews are of dual purpose. 1) To test you English language skills and 2) To test your suitability for the Masters course that you have applied for.
If you haven’t taken an English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL and if you are not from an English speaking country then telephonic interviews allow business school staff to judge your English speaking, understanding and critical thinking skills.
You might have sent in an essay to describe your short-term and long-term goals, or a statement of purpose, the telephonic interview also allows the business schools to gauge further of how the particular Masters course that you have applied for, will fit your needs.
Seats in business schools are limited and the Masters’ programmes are intense. What you bring to the table in terms of qualifications and experience is of great value to the business school. Hence you will have to answer questions convincingly to show how you would benefit from the Masters course you have chosen and how your skills and experience would bring value to the cohort when teamworking with other students within your cohort. While there are no rules to convince the business school that you’re an apt candidate, it could help if you knew and were prepared for certain questions of the following nature:
Q. How will an MBA help you?
This is one of the most important questions that you will need to answer in an unbiased manner, stating in unambiguous terms, the real reason you thought an MBA would be the right career step. It would help if you could elicit life-changing events, personal traits needing development, and relevant thoughts as steps that led to your important decision. Of course, do get to know what the particular MBA course structure is and how it can help you. You can list your priorites and how it led to choosing the particular busniess school like fees, the course structure, city living, references or word of mouth from friends, alumni etc.
Q. What experiences do you bring to the MBA cohort?
State your work background in a chronological order, logically framing how you moved on from one experience to the next in brief. Don’t forget to highlight all sorts of benefits, in terms of learning that you’ve received from such experiences. Your conversation can include your strengths. Give a special mention of those courses or projects that were valuable and provided you with an exciting outlook to your future during your graduation. Most importantly ’sell yourself’ effectively. Mentioning just about your aptitude and desire to learn will not go too far. Talk about your particular experience in innovating a new process, idea or a product in your company or even a simple team task that helped your department at work to stay ahead of schedule. Things like these will help you stand in good stead. A hobby or co-curricular activity such as mountain climbing, scuba diving, helping the elderly, volunteer work etc will help them to remember you easily and it just might work in your favour.
Q. How ready are you?
Make sure you mention that if given the choice, you are prepared with your finances or at least have been screened and or qualified by the bank for an educational loan, if you are seeking one. This will help them in understanding the stage you are in with your plans and also your readiness to join the course.
Some important things...
Do your homework and get yourself ready before the interview. Try and take the interview call in quiet environment where there is no background noise and you are not likely to get distracted. Keep your mobile phone off if you are taking the call on a landline. Have a pen and paper handy to make notes if necessary. Most importantly- know the name and designation of the person calling you. If you forget, a simple ’Sir’ or ’Mam’ might just do the trick.
Remember, telephonic interviews are usually conducted via international calls and staff interviewing have limited time. Hence be precise, be prepared, answer only what you’ve been asked and ask your questions towards the end. Sell yourself with a punch and above all - be courteous.
