From 1900 to the present day, we’ve been leading the way in research and education, making ground-breaking progress in areas that span industries such as gene structure, medicine, space research and communications.Excellent sporting facilities, a busy calendar of social events and a global reputation for teaching makes Birmingham a great place to study – and we’re proud of the calibre of our academic community.
Today, the University continues to nurture a spirit of enquiry, discovery and action. We remain committed to our vision of a University which:
- Enables and inspires individuals to develop their potential so that they grow intellectually throughout life, are well equipped for work and can make an impact on society and its wellbeing
- Increases knowledge and understanding for their own sake and fosters their application for the benefit of society
- Promotes the wellbeing of individuals and helps shape a democratic, civilised and inclusive society
- Serves the needs of the economy locally, regionally, nationally and globally
The Edgbaston campus
The Edgbaston campus is a stunning space, set within 250 acres of parkland. The campus is a safe, friendly environment with all the amenities of a small town – with the added benefit of a full-time security team. Youll find bars, shops, a hair salon, concert hall, art gallery and two major banks on campus. We are also the only university in the UK to have our own railway station, just two stops from Birmingham New Street.
We have a wealth of culture on campus including a world-renowned art gallery, geology museum and a beautiful botanical garden.
The Selly Oak campus
The nearby Selly Oak campus is about 2 miles from Edgbaston. The 80 acre site has a village atmosphere with facilities located at the centre of campus.
Our second campus has its own learning resource centre and is home to the Graduate Institute of Theology and Religion and the Selly Oak Visual Arts Centre. Since 2005, it has also been home to the BBC Drama Village, a pioneering partnership between the University and the BBC, offering our students exciting opportunities to work with TV professionals.
The University currently spends around £1 million each week on developing the campus. We have an ongoing commitment to invest in projects that enhance the learning experience and quality of life of our students and staff. The University’s student population includes 18,500 undergraduate and just over 8,000 postgraduate students. On average, 20% of our undergraduates are recruited locally.
